Though this document is dated July 7th, with notes that it arrived in the UNRRA offices on July 13th, the WRB didn’t get a copy until July 22nd.  The earlier date of the cable makes the message even more frustrating. If you remember, the creation of the Fedhala refugee camp near Casablanca was a long and hard-fought (well, hard-negotiated) battle beginning with the Bermuda Conference in April 1943. It was not until late June 1944 that the main group of refugees arrived from Spain. This cable, dated July 7th, recommends the camp be closed and the refugees sent elsewhere. Can you imagine receiving this after the countless meetings, cables, arguments about the construction and governance of the camp, only to receive a recommendation that it be closed only two weeks after it FINALLY opened?
